New Delhi: The lady who started from being a background dancer in a movie, has now come to co-own a production house, has 3 films to her directorial credit and 6 Filmfare awards for choreography on her shelf. But as one of her dialogues go, at 47, Farah Khan can say – ‘Picture abhi baaki hai mere dost!’
Talking about her family, Farah's father Kamran was a successful stunt film-maker. Her mother Menaka is the sister of screenwriter Honey Irani and former child actor Daisy Irani. Farah's brother is comedian, actor and film director Sajid Khan. Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar are Farah's cousins.
Farah Khan kick started her career when she got a chance to choreograph for the movie ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’. The self-taught dancer who names Michael Jackson as her inspiration, put on the choreographer’s cap when Saroj Khan walked out of the film in 1992. Clearly, after that lucky break there was no looking back. Farah went on to choreograph for a number of successful movies and bagged 6 Filmfare awards for Virasat, Dil Se, Dil Chahta Hai, Kaho Na Pyar Hai, Koi Mil Gaya and for ‘Sheila Ki Jawani’ from her movie ‘Tees Maar Khan’.
Farah met Shah Rukh Khan on the sets of ‘Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa’ and that started of an allegiance that would successfully last for years and also get Farah her directorial debut in 2004. ‘Main Hoon Na’ had Farah donning the director’s hat for the movie that was produced by Gauri Khan – Shah Rukh’s wife and starred Shah Rukh Khan, Sushmita Sen, Suniel Shetty, Zayed Khan and Amrita Rao. The movie did quite well in the box office.
‘Om Shanti Om’ came in 2007 – Farah co-wrote the script for this movie besides directing it. The movie launched Deepika Padukone in Bollywood. ‘Om Shanti Om’ fared decently in the theatres and Farah Khan had started building an image of a director who has her finger on the Bollywood pulse and is not afraid to encash what sells. Farah and Shah Rukh’s friendship is believed to be passing through a rocky patch ever since she chose Akshay Kumar for ‘Tees Maar Khan’ over SRK.
But with ‘Tees Maar Khan’ in 2010 – Farah’s directorial capacities were questioned. The movie was a complete flop with only an item song saving its face. The industry criticized Farah’s choice of script – but the lady stood firm by the script and the writer – Shirish Kunder. And why not – for they had been married for 6 years by then.
Farah had married Shirish in 2004 and they were blessed with triplets in 2008, one son – Czar and two daughters – Anya and Diva. The couple started their own production house called ‘Three’s Company’.
Besides the big screen, Farah has had her solid innings for the TV as well. She hosted the celebrity chat show ‘Tere Mere Beach Mein’ and was a judge on the reality television series ‘Indian Idol’ - Season 1 and Season 2, ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Super Star’, ‘Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega’ and ‘Dance India Dance Li'l Masters’. She is currently a judge alongside Hrithik Roshan and Vaibhavi Merchant on Star Plus' ‘Just Dance’.
Farah has ‘Joker’ coming up for 2012 which stars Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha and here’s hoping that she has a smashing year ahead. While you are at it – here’s a look at the songs that got her the awards.
