She was a mere background dancer once upon a time and a decade and a half later, she has production house to her credit, besides being Bollywood’s most talented choreographer. She has won six Filmfares and has directed moviestoo.
As she turns 47, Farah Khan exclaims that she still has a long way to go. She comes from a family with Bollywood background. Her aunts are Daisy and Honey Irani and therefore, Farhan and Zoya Akhtar are both her first cousins. Her sibling and her stronghold, Sajid Khan is a fantastic comedian and director as well. Bollywood literally runs in her blood and that is exactly what she is the best at!
Her career started as the choreographer of Aamir Khan’s iconic movie,’Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikander’. The movie was fresh and so were her moves. She has never learned dancing from a formal school as such. She has always looked up to Michael Jackson for inspiration. After her breakthrough in the movie, she never ever had to look back as she went dancing her way through it all. She went to give bigger hits in movies with her unusual dance moves. Movies like Virasat and Dil Se got her to mainstream. Then she had hits in the form of Dil Chahta Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kaho Na Pyar Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Koi Mil Gaya and Teesmarkhan!
Shahrukh and Farah along with Karan Johar are considered to be a lovely trio. Farah met SRK on the sets of his movie ‘kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa’. This was the beginning of a beautiful friendship and professional alliance between people who went on to last it for many years after that. In 2004, SRK chose Farah to direct his home production movie ‘Main Hoon Na’ which fared well at the box office. This was followed by Om Shanti Om. Farah Khan proved to be a director who understands film industry and its audience so rightly that she kept on giving hits which seemed ridiculous to the critics and entertaining to the audience. Though ‘Teesmarkhan’ flopped so badly at the box office that people seriously started judging her directorial skills. Though many believe it was the lack of SRK magic which caused the flop. The media also has reasons to believe that Farah and SRK had a fallout over her choosing Akshay Kumar for ‘Teesmarkhan’ over him, but then friend KJo seemed to have ironed out the differences between two of his best pals.
Farah got married to Shirish Kunder in 2004 and the couple had triplets in 2008, two daughters and a son namely Anya, Diva and Czar. Kunder is a scriptwriter. Farah and Shirish now have their own production house named ‘ 3 is Company’. She is popular on television too as she has hosted many popular dance shows like ‘Just Dance’ and ‘Dance India Dance Little Mastters’. She has also been a part of ‘Indian Idol 1 and 2’.
2012 is going to be a very crucial year for her. After the big box office disaster of Teesmarkhan, Farah Khan is again trying her hand at film direction with her next movie ‘Joker’ which has Akshay Kumar again starring opposite the fresh Sonakshi Sinha. May this year bring in every success into her life. Here’s everyone at Bollygraph wishing her a very Happy Birthday!
